Notes

Originally performed in Athens in 411 BCE, Lysistrata is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. When Lysistrata (“Army disbander”) persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual favors from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace, her strategy inflames the battle between the sexes – as both men and women face the comic consequences of going “cold turkey.
